Reporting to the Executive Director for the Stockton Wellness Center, the Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) serves as an integral member of the Stockton Wellness Center leadership team who serve a student community of nearly 10,000.

The Associate Director assists the Executive Director with leading, managing and overseeing providing comprehensive mental health outpatient services including not limited to:  counseling/psychological services to students of Stockton University at Galloway/Atlantic City campuses in the form of individual and group counseling, distance Counseling/telehealth services (TAO), case consultation, crisis/walk-in, triage, supervision as appropriate, assessments, and assistance for other direct care staff.

The Associate Director will offer supervision to counselors and other activities as assigned by the Executive Director of the Stockton Wellness Center and will develop and implement outreach programs and campus programs in collaboration with other departments, will participate in University events and serve on committees. The incumbent will be actively engaged in professional development, conferences, department and divisional activities, professional associations, and workshops.

  • Assists the Executive Director with the oversight, management and implementation of clinical care counseling model consistent with and informed by the unit’s mission, vision, goals and data derived from quality improvement and assessment programs
  • Supervises and trains clinical professional and graduate trainee staff and coordinates clinical service delivery
  • Serves as a member of the clinical counseling staff, providing students with individual, group, walk-in/crisis counseling, etc.
  • Coordinates clinical case management for students experiencing mental health challenges
  • Coordinates the clinical counseling staff’s training and utilization of technology-based resources including Titanium, the office’s electronic medical records system (EMR); tele-counseling and psychoeducational resources (Therapist Assisted Online) and all web-based initiative for the department
  • Reviews and assesses the delivery of all clinical services in an ongoing basis and engage team members in a continual quality improvement process to meet student needs
  • Coordinates preventative mental health programs and community-based mental health services and outreach on campus
  • Assist the Executive Director in managing budgets for grants and the normal operation of the center and preparation of required annual and financial reports
  • Provides a full range of multi-disciplinary, evidence based, culturally centered clinical services for the University population
  • Engages, mentors and trains all staff to implement new initiatives, programs and services
  • Collaborates with campus partners in providing students with support services, educational outreach, training and referral sources for campus offices including but not exclusive to:  Residential Life, Dean of Students Office,  Academic Affairs and faculty; Care and Community Standards, Campus Police, Academic Advising and Preceptors, Athletics and Recreation, Health Services and Learning Access Program
  • Develops and supervises Graduate Student training programs
  • Serves as a leader of the Stockton Wellness Center in the absence of the Executive Director
  • Demonstrates a continuous commitment to professional growth and development by participating in evidence based professional training and educational programs, and participating in professional organizations that promote culture centered, multi-disciplinary, evidence-based care
  • Participate in divisional and university committees as needed. Flexible working hours to include evenings and weekends may be required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of the Stockton Wellness Center, Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs for Health and Wellness and/or the Vice President for Student Affairs

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work or other related areas
  • Current New Jersey State licensure or License eligibility
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience serving as a licensed counselor within a College or University Counseling Center
  • Commitment to Inclusive Student Success

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD, PsyD or EdD in Counseling, Psychology, Social work
  • Previous experience providing clinical supervision and administrative leadership within of a College/University Counseling Center
  • Active membership and involvement with national college/university counseling center professional associations (e.g. American Counseling Association; American College Counseling Association; Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors, etc.)
  • Prior experience with Distance Counseling/telehealth services

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must understand and manage confidential communication and information appropriately
  • Demonstrated commitment to understanding diversity and multicultural issues in a clinical setting
  • Demonstrated evidence of commitment to student centered, culturally centered competence in the practice of Counseling/Psychology including a track record of past and recent evidence of involvement in graduate work, substantive professional development, and/or research efforts in this area
  • Clear evidence of an educational and/or clinical history of specialized training and skill development in the study and practice of cognitive behavioral therapy such as graduate work and internship training with a self-selected, primary emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy, formal supervision in the practice of cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Previous experience in clinical team building where the emphasis is on use of cognitive therapy/evidence-based practice; documented, consistent post graduate history of involvement in professional organizations and professional development activities
  • Knowledge and understanding of collaborative and hierarchical elements of communication in a college or university counseling center environment, a commitment to and understanding of the mission of the Student Wellness Center in relation to the broader University community strategic goals
  • Must plan effectively, manage ambiguity and assist with handling problem areas pro-actively
  • Must demonstrate a strong work ethic and assume accountability
  • Must be committed to continuous improvement of processes, programs and services
  • Ability to initiate positive change
  • Willingness to participate in evening or weekend activities as needed
